The Indian Railway has total 16 zones and Northern Railway is one of the northernmost zones. The Headquarter of Northern railway is situated at New Delhi Railway Station, Delhi. Initially Indian Railway was divided only in nine different Zones and Northern Railway is one of those nine zones.
Northern Railway is having a largest network which covers total 6807 route. It covers the entire states of Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and Union territories of Chandigarh and Delhi.
On 14th April 1952, NR was came into existence by merging three railway (Bikaner Railway, Jodhpur Railway and Eastern Punjab railway) and three divisions of North-West Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh and East India Railway.
On 3rd March 1859, first passenger railway line was opened from Allahabad and Kanpur in North India. It has different Headquarters like Zonal Headquarter is at Baroda House in New Delhi and Divisional Headquarters are located at Delhi, Lucknow, Ambala, Firozpur and Moradabad.
Previously, Northern Railway was comprises eight divisions but later on after re-organization on 14th April 1952 it consists only five divisions. On 19th February 1986, Northern Railway creates a record of starting a first Computerized Passenger Reservation System. It also started the Unreserved Ticketing System. With this UTS facility, passenger can purchase unreserved ticket from the booking counters in 3 days advance.
Northern Railway also introduced first electric and diesel locomotive simulators at Kanpur and Tughlabad. The main motive behind this was to enhancement of railway operations which result the enhancement of employees skills to work with high speed efficiently. All Diesel sheds, workshops and Air brake freight departments are certified with ISO 9000. The major Workshops of Northern Railway are- Carriage and Wagon Workshop,Alambagh, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Locomotive Workshop, Charbagh Railway Station, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Carriage and Wagon Workshop, Kalka (Haryana), Carriage and Wagon Workshop, Jagadhari Railway Station, Yamunanagar (Haryana), Engineering workshop, Jalandhar (Punjab), Bridge Workshop, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Bridge Workshop, Jalandhar, Cantonment (Punjab), Signal and Telecom Workshop, Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh).
This Indian Railway Zone is running training institute at Chandausi, Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh). This training Institute is responsible for training of Group C employees. Under Group C posts of Driver, Ticket Checker, Traffic Inspector, Station Master, Commercial Inspector, Guard and Signal and Telecom etc are available. This training institute is ISO 9001 certified.
