The East Central railway is one of the 16th railway zones in India along with its Head quarter situated at Hajipur with the new divisions like Sonpur, Samrastipur, Danapur, Dhanbad and Mughalsarai. During the year 1996-97 the Indian Railway comprises of nine zones and on 16-6-1996 the Ministry of Railways has decided to setup six new zones that are carved out of the existing networks by adopting reorganization techniques. The East Central Railway was inaugurated on 8-9-1996 which is located 25 kilometers by road and 200 kms away by rail route from Patna (Bihar). They are basically divided into two sectors like Howrah Delhi main lines and Grand Chord.
